The Toronto Maple Leafs opened the 2023-24 season vs the Montreal Canadiens, and it didn't exactly go to plan. It was certainly a back and forth night. Samsonov did not have a great game giving up 5 goals on 24 shots.
A couple new acquisitions also didn't have a great night. John Klingberg struggled defensively even though he managed 2 points in over 24 minutes of ice time. Ryan Reeves dropped the gloves against Montreal’s Arber Xhekaj, and lost as Xhekaj pushed Reeves around and ultimately toppling him over the back of the net.
The Maple Leaf stars shined bright as Austin Matthews put up a hattrick (3 Goals), Jonn Tavares got 3 assists, Nylander with 2 points, and Mitch Marner won the game in the shootout.
Toronto ultimately won the game 6-5.
An exciting standout was newcomer Noah Gregor who just signed a deal from his PTO and scored the Leaf’s first goal.
The highlight of the night was the Maple Leafs brand new goal song that was unveiled. Kid Cudi's “Pursuit of Happiness (Steve Aoki Remix). At first It didn’t come across as a fitting tune, but lets see how this new anthem grows on Leafs nation.
